Author Interview – Evelyn Puerto: Beyond the Rapids
Where were you born and where do you call home?
I can say with certainty I was born in New York City, but where I call home is a little harder. I grew up in Pittsburgh, spent many years in St Louis, 7 years in Russia, and now live in Wisconsin. Depending on my mood, any or all of them can feel like home.
Tell us about something that has just happened or is about to happen in your life that you would like to share.
My youngest stepdaughter is about to graduate from college. As my husband says, she’ll be rolling off our payroll, so it feels like we’ve gotten a raise! More than that, we’re proud of her for what she’s accomplished and are looking forward to seeing where she lands next.
What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?
Beyond the Rapids tells the inspiring true story of Ukrainian pastor Alexei Brynza as he and his family endured fierce persecution during the final decades of the Soviet Union.
Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?
I do have plans for a series of novels. Since I’m just starting to write fiction, I’ve been working on some short stories first before diving into the longer works.
What books have influenced your writing?
So many: The Lord of the Rings and Ali and Nino are the first that come to mind.
Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?
CS Lewis, because he had such a way of cutting to the heart of the issue, especially when debating skeptics and nonbelievers. I’d love to meet him to pick up some pointers on that, and on crafting memorable stories.
Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?
If I just want a quick read, ebooks are the way to go. For a book that I’ll want to refer to, I find a paper version easier to move around in.
Are you a self published (Indie) Author?
I am an Indie author.
What book would you like to read again?
I would like to read War and Peace again. I finally read it last summer, and think it’s brilliant. I’m sure I’ll see a lot more the second time around. I also want to read the last Harry Potter again as well.
What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/paperback/hardcover)?
I’m just finishing Blackout by Connie Willis, in the hardcover version I got from the library.
Who designed the cover of your book?
My publisher did, but my husband came up with concept and I set up the photo shoot to get the cover image.
Do you buy a book by the cover?
I do Sometimes. If the cover is appealing, I may take a second look. I’m more often put off by a cover I don’t like, so I never bother looking further.
Do you have a book trailer?
I do, and it can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2bdLd5Dyw0
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Take your time to learn the craft of writing well. I’ve so many promising indie books that could have been superb had the writing or editing been a little more professional.
Do you ever write in your PJ’s?
No, but I do write in my Ohio State sweatshirt and sweatpants.
Any pets that you would like to tell us about, share a pic?
I have a neurotic cat who thinks I should pay attention to her when I am working.
White wine or red?
White
Coffee or tea?
Tea
Do you like to cook? Do you have a favorite food?
I love to cook, and my favorite food is triple chocolate pumpkin pie.
